Trump Bombed Iran Without Congress. Here's Why That Should Terrify You.

On February 28, in the early morning, USA and Israel conducted a joint military exercise in which they bombed and attacked Iran. They targeted Iran's senior leadership, and were successful in killing many important leaders, including the Supreme Leader himself, Ayatollah Khamenei.

Now, before I begin my podcast, I want to make this crystal clear. I absolutely do not support the Iranian regime at all. They're a dictatorship that brutally suppresses the rights of their women, LGBTQ community, and other minorities, and they hide behind religious justification to do so. Iran is the absolute antithesis to everything I support. I absolutely understand why the Iranian populace is celebrating the death of Khamenei so much.

What's mildly ironic is that if MAGA was able to accomplish all of their goals, America wouldn't look that much different from Iran. They both believe men should be placed above women, LGBTQ should be eradicated, and that everybody should submit to their religious authority. The only difference between MAGA and Iran is that they follow different interpretations of god, so they're arguing about which version has a bigger ... well, ya know.

But I digress. There are two things that stood out to me about yesterday's attack on Iran, and I wanted to talk about them here.

1. What's Next?

This isn't the first time that America has attacked a country in the Middle East with the goal of implementing regime change. And each time, it's always backfired on us. Remember Afghanistan? Oh, we were so gung-ho on riding the country of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. And did so, but didn't have any plans for "winning the peace" so we just sort of lingered there for twenty years. And we all know what happened as soon as our troops left Afghanistan. Yep, the Taliban immediately seized control, as if the past twenty years never happened. All those American lives, blood, and sweat spent ... for nothing.

Then there's the Iraq invasion of 2003. Remember the WMDs (that we never found)? Remember the exuberance when Saddam Hussein was captured, then hanged? How we thought we had brought democracy to Iraq? And what happened? Iraq rapidly became a vassal state for Iran.

This is what I fear will happen in Iran. There's already rumblings that the Iran religious leaders have a replacement leader in mind, and that this new leader is just going to be as ultra-conservative as Khamenei was. Meet the new leader, same as the old leader.

I mean, we literally just saw this play out in Venezuela. The US conducted a daring night-time raid, and arrested Maduro. Venezuelans celebrated. Then we left Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's vice-president, in charge. So basically the exact same government is still in charge of Venezuela. But hey, Trump got to sell some Venezuelan oil and funnel the money to himself, so worth it. Right?

And that leads me to my second point ...

2. How'd This All Happen?

One of the glues that binds this American democratic experiment together is the fact that there are three branches of governments, and each branch has checks and balances on the other two. However, Trump has been doing everything in his power to sidestep this limitation and to amass all power for himself.

When Presidents want to war, they're supposed to seek Congressional approval first. That's what Bush did for the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War. I do get that the USA has not technically declared war since World War II, but regardless, it has always been a requirement for the President to get approval first.

Trump didn't do this at all. He flicked his nose at Congress and approved the Iran mission without consulting with them. He had a head of state killed. He's going to embroil us in another unnecessary, pointless war in the Middle East, and he did it unilaterally.

That's bad enough, but this isn't even the first time he's done something like that. He dismantled the Department of Education and USAID. He levied global tariffs. He destroyed the East Wing of the White House. He had the US military conduct a night-time raid to kidnap the President of a country on their soil. All of those are supposed to have Congressional approval first, but he did them anyway. He's the embodiment of the phrase, "It is better to seek forgiveness than ask for permission," except he doesn't even seek forgiveness. He does things like that because he truly believes that as President, he is entitled to do so.

Now he's planning on using this same authority to prepare a federal takeover of the midterm elections, claiming that Iran "interfered" with the 2020 and 2024 elections (there's zero proof of that, by the way). The Republicans are too spineless to stand up to him, so we have to rely on a corrupted Supreme court and weakened judicial system to protect us. And that's the scary part.
