Second child dies of measles in Texas
The Guardian reported that a second child with measles has died amid the outbreak in Texas that has infected about 500 people. The child is an eight-year-old girl named Daisy Hildebrand.
A hospital in Lubbock, Texas said the child was hospitalized before they died and was receiving treatment for complications of measles. The girl died from pulmonary failure, when the lungs stop functioning normally.
The death is tragic because measles can be prevented through vaccination, and this girl who died did not have a vaccine. The report said the family chose to not vaccinate their child.
It is the second time a child with measles died since February 26 with the first being a six-year-old girl who was also not vaccinated. In early March, a person in New Mexico died after contracting measles.
Health and Human Services Sec. Robert F Kennedy Jr. traveled to Texas to attend Daisy’s funeral. Kennedy Jr. is known for being a skeptic of vaccines, but in a statement on Sunday, he said “The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine.”
