A couple of hot topics that I want to talk about briefly — TikTok and the ceasefire.
On Saturday night, TikTok shut down its service in the U.S. to comply with a U.S. law that required it to either be banned or divested from its Chinese parent company, but soon-to-be-president Donald Trump said he would issue an executive order to give TikTok more time figure out what it wants to do.
Today, TikTok said it is in the process of restoring its service in the U.S. and thanked Trump. Some users have already seen TikTok back online, but the app is not able to be downloaded on Apple or Android’s stores.
So for TikTok users, it’s a whiplash. We should have some more clarity tomorrow after Trump is inaugurated.
The second news — the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas officially went into effect today.
Three Israeli hostages were released by Hamas and arrived in Israel. Later today, Israel is expected to release about 90 Palestinian prisoners.
About 800 trucks of humanitarian aid are expected to enter Gaza today.
The deal calls for 33 Israeli hostages to be released in the coming weeks as long as the ceasefire continues and Palestinian prisoners are released.
This is a major step towards peace, which is something the region has not seen in 15 months of war.
