Transcript: Happy New Year! Welcome to the first Hi5 of 2025. Today is January 10! My name is Philip Bravin. I am honored to be your ASL signer today!

#1 Remembering President Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away on December 29, 2024 at the age of 100. Gallaudet was honored to have a special relationship with President Carter during and after his presidency. You can learn more by reading the article. Thank you for your service, President Carter!

#2 Dr. Kota Takayama Receives Ambassador’s Commendation

Dr. Kota Takayama, G-’09, is an Associate Professor in Gallaudet’s Social Work program. This past December, he became the first Deaf recipient of a special Commendation from the Japanese Ambassador to the US. Check out the article to learn more about Dr. Takayama’s work!

#3 Bison Stars at International Basketball Tournament

In December, the Gallaudet campus hosted the 2024 Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF) 3x3 World Cup. Four former Bison basketball players won first place for the women, and the men’s third-place team had three former Bison. Other teams with former Bison also had strong showings. Way to represent Gallaudet on the world stage!

#4 Professors at Accessible Computing Conference

Gallaudet’s Accessible Human-Centered Computing (AHCC) program played a key role in the 26th annual ASSETS Conference this past October. Professor Raja Kushalnagar received an award for his mentoring work, and Associate Professor Abraham Glasser helped to make the event inclusive as the Accessibility Co-Chair.

#5 Gallaudet Students Cruising for Semester at Sea

Biology majors Julia Bronneberg and Macy DeGraw spent the fall semester traveling the world on a cruise ship! They visited 8 countries, meeting Deaf and hard of hearing people across the globe. Their experience was captured by The Chronicle of Higher Education. What a journey!
