Here are our Top Five news stories.

1
The 2024 U.S. Presidential election is history. Our students voted in large numbers, according to student pledges, thanks to the voter registration campaigns conducted earlier this semester. On Tuesday evening, November 5, SignVote and the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership hosted a watch party. Over 350 people attended, and Inside Higher Education published an online story about the event. Counseling and Psychological Services held community dialogues on Wednesday and Thursday, and President Cordano had breakfast with faculty on Thursday. She emphasized that there has always been strong bipartisan support from Congress for the university.

2
Our women’s volleyball team, riding a 21-match winning streak, hosts Lancaster Bible College tomorrow in the Field House, defending their 2023 United East Conference championship. If they win, they will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament later this month.

Our football team also plays tomorrow at 12 noon on Hotchkiss Field for third place in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. We wish both teams the best of luck!

3
In 2021, Gallaudet signed an Education Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. NGA analyst Erick Posner is an adjunct professor at the university, teaching courses on Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software. Eric Kaika, our Landscaping and Grounds manager, uses this software often, and Posner’s students work with Kaika on a variety of projects. Read more about this exciting initiative on our website.

4
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter became 100 years old on October 1. President Carter visited Gallaudet twice after he left the White House, in 1992 and 2010. He was working with Habitat for Humanity to build houses in neighboring communities. We have a story about President Carter’s two visits on our website.

Tuesday, December 3 is GivingTuesday, the annual global day of giving. This year, all GivingTuesday donations to our Necessity of Now campaign will be matched dollar for dollar. The Necessity of Now campaign supports future economic equity and inclusion by funding an equitable outdoor learning space on Gallaudet’s campus called the Louise B. Miller Pathways and Gardens: A Legacy to Black Deaf Children. It also supports student scholarships, research, and programming at our Center for Black Deaf Studies. Please mark your calendar to give on that day!

On our website, we have many stories about our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, highlighting the amazing things they are doing here, around the country, and across the globe.

The next issue of Hi5 will be on Friday, December 13. In the meantime, stay up to date by following @GallaudetU on our social media platforms. If you have a story that you feel would be a good fit for Hi5 or social media, please share it with us at gu.live/request.

Have a wonderful weekend!
