Welcome to the November 1 issue of Hi5! My name is Roderick Stickley, and I am a Coordinator of Residence Education with Residence Life and Housing. I am honored to be your ASL signer today!
Here are our Top Five news stories.
1
On October 18, Gallaudet held a healing and renaming ceremony at Building 103, formerly known as Dawes House. From now on, it will be known as Circle of Signers. The ceremony, led by Turtle Island Hand Talk, a Native American Deaf group, drew hundreds of people, and was very moving and emotional.
The “We, Native Deaf People, Are Still Here!” exhibition opened the same day in the National Deaf Life Museum. It will be open for 2 years.
2
The Regional Early Acquisition of Language (REAL) project, a collaboration between the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, launched a new Bilingual Stories Bookshelf App to support early language acquisition for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. More information is available on our website.

Dr. Danielle Previ of the Gallaudet Psychology Clinic was the keynote presenter at the first-ever National Autism in Deaf Education Conference, held October 17-19 at the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut. Dr. Previ’s presentation was titled “Deaf on the Spectrum.” Congratulations, Dr. Previ!
4
Dr. James Huang, director of the Student Health Service, was named one of four recipients of the 2024 Early Achievement Award from his medical school, the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. Dr. Huang is board-certified in family medicine. He has been at Gallaudet since last year. Congratulations, Dr. Huang!

The United East Conference announced last week that they would add women’s flag football as a sport starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. Gallaudet’s club team, which begins play next spring, will become a varsity team the following year. We look forward to seeing our flag football team shine!
On our website, we have many stories about our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, highlighting the amazing things they are doing here, around the country, and across the globe.
