The remote and mountainous terrain of Appalachia historically fostered more insular communities, including those of Deaf individuals. Facing limited access to resources such as schools for the Deaf, many relied heavily on family and local community networks. One of the most cherished events for these communities was the annual Deaf gathering, where members would often travel great distances, sometimes driving up to eight hours or camping overnight in the woods, just to attend. These gatherings became key moments of connection and cultural exchange within the Appalachian Deaf community.
