ASL Transcript: Welcome to the September 20 issue of Hi5! My name is Guthrie Nutter, and I am Manager of Strategic Planning and Communications in the Office of Strategic Planning and Integration. I am honored to be your ASL signer today!

Here are our Top Five news stories.

1
The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center is proud to announce its new logo, or visual identity. This bilingual logo incorporates Laurent Clerc’s name sign in the same spirit that one sees Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet’s name sign in the Gallaudet University logo. The new Clerc Center logo also reflects the three major service areas of Clerc Center that make up the organization: its two demonstration schools, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and its national mission. This logo was a collaborative effort with many people involved. It will be rolled out this fall.

2
The Drs. John S. and Betty J. Schuchman Deaf Documentary Center has received a four-year, $3 million research grant from the National Science Foundation through its Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program. A documentary, Deaf in Motion, and a companion website will draw on research conducted by the Schuchman Center on ways Deaf people served the United States as test subjects in early space studies conducted by the United States Navy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Congratulations to the Schuchman Center and its director, Dr. Brian Greenwald!

3
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has given full approval for the Gallaudet University football team to use a helmet designed for players who are deaf or hard of hearing for the remainder of the season. The helmet, developed by Gallaudet University and AT&T over the last two years, debuted last year in one game, which the Bison won.

4
Dr. Brendan Stern, executive director of the Center for Democracy in Deaf America, has been presenting on the 2024 presidential election to local Deaf communities throughout the United States. In collaboration with the Office of Alumni Relations, he presented a SignVote community workshop at the NorCal (Northern California) chapter of GUAA, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association last weekend. He is in Austin, Texas this weekend, presenting to the Austin GUAA chapter. Next weekend, he will travel to Florida to present to the St. Augustine chapter. CDDA and SignVote also are hosting several on-campus events from now through Election Day, including the fifth annual Stories and Speeches in Sign event, panel discussions, a booth at Homecoming, watch parties and discussions for the vice presidential debate on October 1, and the election on November 5. Be sure to vote on November 5!

Gallaudet students participated in three study abroad programs this summer, in Italy, Spain, and Japan. Eleven students spent the month of June in Spain, learning Spanish Sign Language (LSE) and Spanish Deaf Culture. An additional 13 students explored Italian Deaf culture, history, and Italian Sign Language (LIS) at Siena School for Liberal Arts. Five students in our Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Planning Program (DEP) traveled to Japan to do hands-on research and training July 13-26. Also on our website, we have many stories about our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, highlighting the amazing things they are doing here, around the country, and across the globe.
