How Does EMDR work? Science Behind EMDR

If you are curious about the science behind EMDR, Deaf Counseling Center therapist, Lisa, shares some thoughts on this.
Another theory suggests that EMDR bilateral stimulation (referring to the side to side eye movements) mimics the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) of slow-wave sleep. This dream phase of our sleep each night helps us process any emotions and memories that may have happened during our day.
This is why when we have a big decision to make, “sleeping on it” usually means we wake up in the morning calmer and better able to think about it. Slow-wave sleep - and theoretically, EMDR eye movements - calms the amygdala, in turn, allowing the brain to process traumatic memories. #EMDR #emdrtherapy
