English summary:
Hello, I’m Adrean. I’ve been thinking about why Deaf people have a
hard time with their ASL fluency. Recently I talked with a hearing
interpreter friend who also teaches interpreting. She told me about a
book called “Chatter” — it analyzes how we think while we’re doing
things. Our inner narrative has an influence on how we perceive
ourselves. If we’re thinking “Wow this is amazing, I did well!” while
we’re doing a project, then it may become easier to continue doing
that kind of work. On the other side, if we think “I’m not worthy of
this. Why do I say stupid things?” while we’re talking with another
person, our interaction may not go well. The mental chatter can help
or interfere with what we’re dojng. I asked the interpreter how to
help change that mental chatter. She said look at our inner emotions.
Do we have a growth mindset? A lightbulb went off in my mind. We Deaf
people struggle with our ASL fluency because trauma interferes with
our inner narratives. This is my theory on ASL acquisition trauma and
how to heal it. It is split into two parts: Past and Present. The next
2 videos will address these topics.
