Years ago, a Virginia family, passionate about Deaf Education, Deaf Life, and sign language, named their son after Reverend Thomas Gallaudet.
This tall tombstone belongs to Deaf Hartwell Macon Chamberylane, who attended the New York School for the Deaf - Fanwood. Reverend Thomas Gallaudet, a notable figure at St. Ann Church for the Deaf in New York City, was the son of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Deaf Sophia Fowler.
Hartwell’s family also included an older Deaf brother, Edward Pye Chamberlayne, who attended the American School for the Deaf.
