We are now able to share some very exciting news about our football team. You may have seen them on Good Morning America this morning. If you missed it, never fear: Here is the link to watch it online.

For more than two years, AT&T has been working with our football team to create a new 5G-connected helmet. This helmet is for the quarterback; it may become available to other players at a later time. It has a built-in heads-up display, a clear lens that can display information. Our coach, Chuck Goldstein, has a tablet with the football team playbook on it. He can select a play and send it to the quarterback. The play is sent via 5G, AT&T’s high-speed cellular network, and appears instantly on the quarterback’s lens. The quarterback will then sign the play call to the rest of the team.

If Coach Goldstein sees the defense shift, he can alert the quarterback to look to the sideline, or switch to another play. Once again, the quarterback can tell the team.

The result? Clear communication. Faster action. Less penalties. This technology truly levels the playing field.

How awesome is that?

Again, this process took two years. AT&T engineers worked with us every step of the way. They talked with Coach Goldstein. They talked with our players. They created prototypes and shared them with us. They took our feedback. Our alumnus, Rodney Burford, said, “They heard us.” They came back this summer with an even better helmet!

The helmet has passed inspection by the national organization that certifies athletic equipment for safety. It has been approved by the NCAA. And this Saturday, it will be used for the first time in an actual game. Please join us on Saturday at noon as we host Hilbert College for this historic moment.

In 1894, we made history when Paul Hubbard invented the huddle. Today, in 2023, we are making history again with the first-ever 5G-connected football helmet. I firmly believe that this will change the game of football as we know it. I predict that the NCAA and the NFL will adopt it within a few years. Connecting changes everything, and it all started here, at Gallaudet, alongside AT&T.

Finally, I am thrilled to announce that AT&T, in appreciation for our work together, is making a donation to support our athletics department and football program. President Cordano, Coach Goldstein, and I will accept this gift on behalf of the university in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday. We thank AT&T for their innovation and their generosity.

Come to our game on Saturday at noon and witness history!

Go Bison!
