In January 2023, the NAD went to the US Supreme Court with Disability Rights Michigan, Latham & Watkins, and Ellen Saideman, to represent a Deaf man, Miguel Luna Perez, who grew up in a public school district without any access to sign language interpreters or accommodations. We hope for positive results in a few months.
HOWARD: I'm standing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court because we're representing a Deaf man from Michigan, Miguel Luna Perez. Miguel grew up in a public school district without any access to sign language interpreters or accommodations. We took legal action because they violated two laws. First, we filed legal action for violations of the IDEA, the special ed law, which we successfully settled. We then wanted to sue under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This lawsuit was denied, so we appealed and appealed, and as a result, we're here at the Supreme Court. This is important because both laws apply to this case so we should be able to take action under both laws. That's why we're here. The oral argument is done, we will find out the results in a few months.
