ON-SCREEN-TEXT: Joseph is deaf.
JOSEPH: I work with a research team on Black ASL. People who lived in the south during segregation meant deaf schools segregated their black and white students. This meant black students developed their own sign language which was very different from their white peers. ASL dictionaries don’t talk about this. Interpreting programs don’t include this in their curriculum. Once we collected information, we published it so more people know about Black ASL.
