Hi, I am Jared Evans. I am the Information Security Officer for Gallaudet University under Gallaudet Technology Services.
As the situation between Russia and Ukraine continues, and in response to financial sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States, we expect to see an increase in cyberattacks.
Higher education institutions unfortunately are at particular risk. Here are some important online safety tips to protect your personal information and to keep Gallaudet’s systems up and running.
Phishing
Be mindful of phishing emails – you may notice an increase in the number of phishing emails, text messages, or even social media chats and direct messages.
Phishing emails are the number one way for attackers to steal your information or cause further damage to systems.
These emails can be made to look like they are from a legitimate company or even someone you know.
If you look carefully though, you'll probably notice spelling and grammar mistakes or other things that seem odd. A good rule of thumb is to trust but verify.
Passwords
Keep your passwords safe and don't share them with anyone else. Keep in mind GTS or other companies will never ask for your password.
Don’t reuse the same passwords for multiple accounts
Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) on your phone
Gallaudet already requires this added layer of security.
You are encouraged to opt into MFA on your personal accounts whenever possible.
MFA, sometimes called 2-step verification, can include sending text codes to your phone, or notifications to your authenticator app.
Security Updates and Backups
Keep your desktop or laptop up to date by applying security updates as soon as they are available.
Back up your data regularly.
Trust but Verify
If you sense that something is off, trust your instincts.
If you get a message that you suspect is a phishing attempt:
Don’t click on any of the links
Don't enter your username or passwords or provide any personal or financial information.
If you can, check with the sender in a separate method to verify that they really sent it to you.
If it's an email, report it as a Phishing email. There is an option to report this within your mail app.
If it's a message through social media, report it to the social media company.
If you notice odd behavior on a Gallaudet system, let us know as soon as possible by submitting an IT Service Desk ticket so we can investigate. You can submit a ticket by going to Link
If you aren't sure what to do, go ahead and ask Gallaudet Technology Services (GTS) for help by submitting an IT Service Desk ticket.
If you are experiencing issues on your personal computer or you are not a Gallaudet employee or student, contact your local computer service store.
You are our first and best line of defense against cyberattacks. It's up to us all to keep each other safe. GTS is here to help you.
