Today marks the 31st anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)! Thanks to the ADA, it opens many doors for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Even with the ADA, we still have a lot of work ahead of us before we truly have equal access.
[TRANSCRIPT & DESC: Andrew stands in the middle of the screen.
Andrew: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990 -- the ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. The ADA opened doors for employment opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people. Today, we have Deaf lawyers, Deaf nurses, Deaf doctors, Deaf engineers, Deaf scientists, Deaf interpreters… and so much more! If not for the ADA, state and local governments wouldn’t have been required to provide access to information during the COVID pandemic. " In fact, all 50 state Governors provided an ASL interpreter during COVID-19 related briefings during the pandemic. Thanks to the ADA, you can watch streaming movies and programs with captions anytime. Ordering delivery? Making an appointment? Calling your bank or credit card company? Being able to communicate with anyone at any time and anywhere through relay services is only possible because of the ADA.]
