Advanced ASL Math Test: Count How Many Nurses Are In The Room

Some behind the scenes: Here’s me trying out joke 1 of 15 for my “Netflix Special” 🤓😄 — it didn’t make final cut for my set.

I have hundreds of jokes written down all over the place — sometimes my brain goes on a roll and thinks of 4 or 5 punchlines back to back to back — that’s fairly normal for me. Sometimes at night I’ll force myself to come up with as many as I can before I fall asleep — it’s my “counting sheep” method and it makes me fall asleep laughing to myself (I know! Super hot, right? Not creepy at all. 🤦‍♂️)

What’s not normal is for me to come up with about 15 of them between going on a run, taking a shower, and eating breakfast.

This was back over winter break when I was visiting friends and family and decided to just hit record and try and bang ‘em out (*pause* I’m talking about the jokes, not my family and friends wow) one after another. I ended up recording about half of them right away, and played around w a select few the next day to let my 🧠 better build narratives in which to embed the punchline/misunderstanding — because the signplay (read: wordplay if u a hearie) has to be plausible, just enough, in both context and natural acceptable linguistic utterance, for the viewer not to get snapped out of suspended disbelief during my storytelling.

Ok enough of the meta-explanations.

I thought it’d be fun to have like a legit “5-10 minute set” of jokes I could share, so all of us ASL inclined peoples could enjoy a standup routine from the comfort of home just like millions of other Hearing people do on Netflix. I ended up posting most of the jokes as stand alone content, eventually though, I sloppily pieced all the bits together and uploaded the set as a single video, “Laughter Is Medicine: Trust Me I’m A Doctor,” you can find this first attempt of mine in the IGTV section of Instagram. I hope it has brought some small amount of joy to your days and nights.

Laughter really is a potent stimulator of happiness.

Big hugs and lots of 🤟🏼,
—ewitty
