MELISSA: Hello, I'm Melissa. Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that it's January. I'd like to share what happened during our quarterly board meeting that took place here, in Las Vegas. Throughout the weekend, we met at the office of Deaf Centers of Nevada (DCN). We had a full day of business meeting on Thursday, during which we discussed different issues affecting our community, priority updates, conference preparations, and more. On Friday morning, we visited a deaf educational program at the Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School, which has about 20 deaf students. Our board of 15 people were split up into three groups, two groups read books with one group reading to 1st graders and another group reading to 2nd graders while the third group talked about the NAD with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. It was a lovely visit! Afterwards, we continued our board meeting at DCN. On Friday evening, we were able to have dinner with some of the officers of the Nevada Association of the Deaf (NVAD). We appreciated the opportunity to learn their future goals, their plans to achieve them, and the ways we can support them. They're excited to accomplish those goals! Then Saturday morning, we continued our board meeting by discussing our committees and updates, and also went through each committee’s work to ensure readiness to report at the NAD conference this July. In the afternoon on Saturday, the NAD and NVAD co-hosted a town hall which was a great opportunity to meet local people from the Las Vegas area, including DCN employees and a representative from the Nevada Commission for Persons Who Are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Speech Impaired. We were also able to virtually connect with some people in Reno, which is about an 8-hour drive. At the town hall, people shared concerns and issues that are not the same as usual big city issues. We learned a lot from everyone at the town hall meeting. Oh, and before I forget, we also had a diversity training session on Saturday morning before the town hall, provided by representatives from the Bay Area Asian Deaf Association (BAADA) and the National Asian Deaf Congress (NADC). Thank you, BAADA and NADC, for giving us your time and sharing your culture with us. Again, thanks to DCN for providing us your space for our meeting and town hall, thanks to Roundy Elementary School for allowing us to visit, and thanks to the NVAD officers for joining us. We are excited that details about our next conference will be shared very soon! Our next board meeting will be in Montana. See you soon.
