What are you doing to improve employment this month? #NDEAM2019

HOWARD: What is so important about this month, October? It is the National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The reason people promote NDEAM is because oftentimes Deaf people and other people with disabilities are not being hired for jobs. NDEAM is important to remind corporations, businesses, the U.S. Government, and states to hire deaf and hard of hearing people who have the skills for which they’re recruiting. We don’t only promote employment during October, as employment is one of our on-going efforts. We have many projects and efforts related to improving employment opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people. NDEAM in October is for spreading awareness! I’ll share some examples of our efforts in employment for deaf and hard of hearing people. First, our National Employment Resources Center (NERC) is a great web resource for employers who are looking to hire deaf people and for deaf people who are looking for a job. There are a lot of tips, information and how-to’s. Secondly, with thanks to Starbucks’ grant, we’re doing two projects -- one is a new Deaf At Work video campaign highlighting deaf people in different job fields to show that deaf people can do anything. And two, we did mock interviews with deaf youths at four different schools. We invited businesses to provide deaf students a mock interview. As a result, deaf students gained interview experience. We also do a lot of work with the Federal Government to try to convince them to improve their policies. All of this is being done to improve employment for all!
