This year is Youth Leadership Camp's 50th anniversary, what a milestone! #AskHoward

HOWARD: Deaf youth is extremely important -- that's why the NAD greatly values the Youth Leadership Camp (YLC). Thanks to YLC, many deaf youth have thrived and succeeded in becoming leaders. I bring this up because this year we celebrate YLC's 50th anniversary. For the last 50 years, there have been 64 deaf youth campers attending YLC each summer. They go to learn leadership skills, how to discuss important issues, how to work as a team, how to compromise, and all other skills necessary for all of us to work together as a strong community to advance our future. We must recognize Frank Turk and Gary Olsen, who came up with the idea for YLC in 1968 and one year later they started YLC in 1969 in Pennsylvania. And without fail, YLC has had a session every summer since then and will continue for years to come! The YLC did not stay in Pennsylvania. After its first summer, YLC then moved to Minnesota for 20 years before moving to Camp Taloali for 13 years, then to South Dakota for a year, then a year in Florida, and finally YLC returned to and remained in Camp Taloali for the last 14 years. YLC has been at Camp Taloali in Oregon for a total of 27 years and YLC will continue to stay at Camp Taloali. I hope you have a chance to visit YLC and learn more about YLC! I also want to thank the YLC Alumni Foundation (YLCAF) for hosting a successful reunion during Memorial Day weekend. Many campers from almost all of the summer sessions since 1969 attended the reunion. It was great to learn what happened over the years to everyone who benefited from YLC. Many shared their experiences and the impact YLC had on their lives. It remains clear that YLC is extremely important and I know YLC will be around for years to come. I look forward to more deaf youth succeeding! Thank you.
