For many years, he was called H. L. Johns in published works as one of the first 3 black deaf teachers in America (two from North Carolina). His real name is Harry Leonard Johns from Baltimore, Maryland. He was taught by fresh Gallaudet graduates and was a brilliant man who went to work at Texas Black Deaf School for few years. He decided to return to Baltimore and became a coal salesman and owned a rowhouse on West Ostend Street as a head of household. Many of his family members lived under him and he welcomed them, especially his close deaf brother, Leonard Carroll Johns.
