HOWARD: This week is the International Week of the Deaf led by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). WFD established this one week annual awareness campaign many years ago and set it for the last full week of September. Not only that, recently WFD convinced United Nations to officially recognize September 23rd as the International Day of Sign Languages, every year starting in 2018. These two great recognitions parallel the NAD's mission which is to preserve, protect, and promote the civil, human, and LINGUISTIC rights of deaf and hard of hearing Americans. The NAD advocates for deaf and hard of hearing people's right to be able to use sign language for all parts of life everyday; for education, at the workplace, and to access the system. Our rights are dependent on our having access to everything and our ability to use sign language through all this. Make sure we reach out to everyone about sign language, especially to parents to encourage them to sign with their deaf children. With sign language, deaf children will thrive. This week is for us to celebrate our culture and our sign languages. Join us in celebrating this week, use any way you choose to celebrate sign languages. Thank you.
