Thank Everyone of you for prayed my Granny in peace!
Celebrating the Life of "Renowned Gospel Singer" Essie M. Hill was born in Tifton, GA to the late Lizzie and Brant Terry.
At the age of 7 she started singing at the Springfield Baptist Church where her ministry for gospel music began.
In the 1940's she moved to Pittsburgh, resided in the Hill District where her life began as a wife to the late William Buford Hill and mother to the late Eddie Hill, Sr.
She retired from Presbyterian University Hospital as the first black manager and served 23 years of service.
During her 77 years as a member in the church her service to the Lord included Sunday school teacher, choir member, soup kitchen volunteer and missionary ministry.
In the 1960's at Forbes Field she opened twice for Mahalia Jackson. Her music travels included performances with the Gospel pioneers Sam Cook, the Blind Boys of Mississippi and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. She always enjoyed her travels with numerous quarters and choirs in Pittsburgh throughout the years. She was inspired to spread her joy by performing many standing room only concerts throughout her life.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Newspaper began following Essie at the age of 86 with articles announcing her first gospel folk CD released in 2005, second one in 2007. Her life is a testimony to the power of strong faith.
Member of the Eastern Star Victory Chapter, also an avid member of the Vintage, her second home. According to Ms. Essie, "I want no special place in the Kingdom; I just want to make it i" Which speaks to her humble spirit.
