NAD President Melissa gives an update about her visit to WFD in Budapest, the NAD and RID relationship, and the next NAD Board meeting in Hawaii.
VIDEO DESCRIPTION AND TRANSCRIPT: Melissa is standing in front of a leaf artwork hung on white wall behind her. A small white NAD logo appears on bottom right corner.
MELISSA: Hi, I'm Melissa. This video will share three updates. First, I went to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Conference two weeks ago in Budapest, Hungary. Over 700 people attended the conference representing 83 different countries! The international sign for "countries" is this [shows sign]. The conference had three workshop tracks: bilingual education, employment, and technology. On Thursday, we had experts from different countries give presentations about bilingual education. Then on Friday, we had people give presentations on either employment or technology. For employment, we had workshops that discussed ways to better prepare deaf children to enter the workforce. For technology, we learned about new technology from different countries and figure ways to implement similar technology advances in our own country. All workshops were done in international sign language.
My second update I'd like to share is about RID. The NAD Board has received several inquiries about the NAD's relationship with RID. For the past year and a half, the NAD and RID has continued dialogue on various issues. Currently, we're focused on two things between both organizations. One involves RID Region I coordinating the Interpreting workshop track for our upcoming NAD Conference, #NAD2018. The second thing is establishing a committee, we're currently working on identifying people from the NAD and RID to serve on the committee. I've been closely in touch with RID President Melvin.
My third and final update is about our next NAD Board meeting in Hawaii. We are very excited to meet the local deaf community in Hawaii and have started planning for our visit. We look forward to learning what their issues and concerns are and inspirational news that would benefit those in the Mainland.
Thank you.
