[Video Description: On the left, Chris Haulmark, a caucasian male with short brown hair and trimmed beard, is sitting at a table wearing a dark blue, long-sleeved, and buttons-up shirt. Hello everyone!
This is Chris Haulmark, running for US House of Representatives in Kansas's Third Congressional District.
Today, I’m introducing my daughter, Maci.
She’s nine years old.
[Maci takes over the conversation in sign language.]
Introducing him, but I have a few things to say about about my dad here.
Okay, so, Number One: I think that he is able to be a good representative as the Congressman.
Because I am in his life.
I have been keeping up for a whole month.
You should know that I am crazy.
I’m hard to handle.
*thinking*
He knows how to do it. He knows what I want.
He UNDERSTANDS me.
He knows what I don’t want- what I will say “no†to, so he tries his best to get all those things [I don’t want] out [of the picture].
Number Two: He gives other people someone to look up to.
I’m one of those people.
I look up to him.
He's a very good model.
And I think that other people should listen to him. Hear him out.
Number Three: I don’t think it’s right to let someone who’s different to…umm…to let someone who is NOT LIKE you...umm… not be included in something.
But that’s one act of bullying of someone that’s different.
You can’t do that on purpose and exclude someone.
[Maci turns to Chris and asks him a question.]
Number Three?
[Chris briefly provides an answer.]
Now, Number Four.
[Maci turns back to the camera and continues.]
Oh, Number Four, Number Four: he helps me with my homework.
If I get stuck, he will come to me and ask: What’s wrong?
*showing my frustrations of the homework*
He tries his best to explain it out to me:
What should be going on, what I don’t need, what I should throw-
[Maci accidentally hit Chris in the face during the signing while Chris remains calm.]
oops!
What I should throw out.
And…
What should not even do.
If it’s a trick question, he’ll help me with that.
He helps me understand what I should be DOING, or where to find them- he doesn’t tell me all the answers.
He gives me hints.
Number Five: I think that…because he’s different like other people, he gets double the votes.
So other people who are different, like… People With Color; People who have blindness; Who have umm… mental health issues;
Who… *thinking*
Who… *pausing*
Who are, yes, Deaf, too!
And...also, there’s probably a LOT more…
There’s probably a lot of people in the world who are different and who support…
[Maci turns to Chris with a question.]
Is that the correct ASL sign for support?
[Chris provides the correct sign of SUPPORT in American Sign Language.]
[Maci resumes the conversation and looks back to the camera.]
Yes, yes, SUPPORT him.
So I think that’s a good star.
Because then other people would see who you [he] really are.
They would know that people- just because you’re different, doesn’t mean: you can’t do that, you can’t do that, you can’t raise a child.
NO!
He is doing all those things!
He’s driving and raising me!
[Chris Haulmark laughs out loud.]
Umm… hmm…*thinking*
He has a roommate. He has a car- whoa!
And he’s running to be a Congressman!
Now, how IMPRESSIVE is that? Get it? Yeah!
Got that?
[Chris taps on Maci and signs…]
Thank you!
[Both of Chris and Maci hugs each other!]
[Chris gives the thumb up sign and ends the video.]
