Hello everyone!

I am Chris Haulmark, running for U.S. House of Representatives in Kansas’s Third Congressional District!

Today, we will discuss about grassroots [movement].

First, the sign for grassroots is, GRASSROOTS.

Why is this sign designed as it is?

The hand shape up here represents "grass," and between both hands represents "ground," with fingers extended, representing "roots."

Now you can understand the ASL sign for GRASSROOTS!

The GRASSROOTS sign was invented by Wesley Arey, a Deaf Virginian.

Wesley created the GRASSROOTS sign when he and I worked together in founding our Deaf Grassroots Movement, also known as "DGM."

Okay..

Now, we may wonder: "What was the purpose of DGM?" or "What is the structure of a grassroots movement?" or "How do grassroots movements accomplish what is necessary?"

Ok, First, let’s discuss Senator Bernie Sander’s grassroots movement that reached national significance in 2016.

Did Senator Sanders start this grassroots movement?

No, not at all.

What Senator Sanders did was consistently share his message to a few people, which was an audience of about 30 or 40 people at the very beginning.

He inspired his listeners to grow in numbers, pulling in more people to become involved and follow his message.

Just last year, during the presidential election, that small movement exploded into millions of active grassroots members!

What an impressive critical mass!

THAT is what a grassroots movement is!

We might have heard their slogan: “Feel the Bern!”

That is an catchy and awesome slogan with the phonic replacement of “burn” with “Bern.”

Let's think here: was that quote invented by Senator Bernie Sanders?

No, not at all.

One of the grassroots movement members created this quote then suddenly, it caught fire, using that slogan repeatedly as it emerged from the grassroots movement!

At the same time, when Senator Sanders shared advice with the grassroots movement members, many listened and followed his wise advice.

That's it- how it worked.

Yet, really, the grassroots leadership is just a small group that helped share Senator Sander's insight for spreading the movement.

Who could this small group of leaders be?

A false front paid by Sen. Sanders?

No, not at all.

Sanders did not order the leadership what to do.

This leadership just decided by themselves on what to do, to motivate participation in the movement supporting Senator Sanders’ presidential run.

Now, the grassroots leadership continues to following Senator Sanders’ advice for all Democrat Party leaders and other political leaders should do.

THAT is how grassroots movements successfully work at the national level.

Also, we have a new local grassroots movement budding here in Kansas!

Why is this so?

Tyson Foods wants to build a chicken processing plant here in Kansas, near the Third Congressional District.

As this corporate takeover unfolds, some of the local population are deeply concerned.

The worried NIMBY locals have started gathering attention to Tyson’s destructive plans that may permanently ruin our land and our drinking water.

It is well known that Tyson Foods has a history of creating devastating pollution in the areas where their plants are built.

The local grassroots folks became concerned and became vocal, pulling in more fellow locals to support and share information on Tyson Foods' actions.

And see how the grassroots members are also actively influencing their political leaders in blocking Tyson Foods from building a new chicken processing plant in Kansas, near the Third Congressional District here.

See!?

THAT'S an awesome local grassroots movement example here!

Now we can get the picture of about how grassroots movements start and work.

Grassroots movement have a clear goal: To influence political action or a politician him/herself.

Theoretically if a major issue appears, those few watchdog leaders would take notice, and then draw in members to band together as a group in support of each other to fight back or support this politician or that political action.

THAT'S is what a grassroots movement is!

I, as Chris Haulmark, need a grassroots movement to support my campaign through sharing our message out there; to pull in more people to get involved in supporting and pushing this Congressional campaign forward.

Together, we can do it!
