Hello and good morning!
I am Chris Haulmark, running for U.S. House of Representatives in Kansas’s Third Congressional District!
Today is Labor’s Day!
Labor Day was established to honor the American worker, our labor movement, and the resulting unions that have built this country for centuries.
Today's topic covers a woman: Frances Perkins.
Frances Perkins was an extraordinary person who accomplished so much for all of us in regards to employment.
Frances Perkins helped all American laborers through improving the quality of life.
When former president Franklin Roosevelt hired her as Department of Labor head, Frances Perkins became the first woman executive on the presidential cabinet.
Also…she was willing to join the president’s cabinet only on one condition, which was consented to, and successfully met.
What was that condition?
Near the end of her life, Frances Perkins was asked: â€What was your greatest accomplishment within the Roosevelt administration that helped all Americans?â€
She replied…“The establishment of Social Security.â€
Now as we can see, since 1935 when Social Security was established, American lives have improved tremendously!
[Grinning]
Thank you, Frances Perkins!
Let’s celebrate Labor Day!
