HOWARD: For this month's AHA, I'm excited to share what the NAD has been working on in collaboration with the American Bar Association (ABA). ABA is a voluntary membership organization of lawyers in the U.S. ABA contracted the NAD to write a book that explains in depth the rights of a deaf and hard of hearing person in courtrooms in the U.S. The book shares information about the rights of a deaf and hard of hearing defendant, plaintiff, victim, witness, spectator, judge, and all other staff members in the court room. The book explains the courtroom's responsibility in providing communication access such as interpreters, CART (real time captioning), and other services. For many years, courtrooms have not fully understood their responsibilities and, as a result, our rights to access courts have been ignored. The ABA understands this problem and asked the NAD to write a book to address this issue. The book is published by ABA and ABA will distribute this book to all courtrooms in the U.S. You can download a PDF copy online, as there will not be many prints of the book. If you face any issues in a courtroom in the U.S., you can access the PDF and show it to the person in charge at the courthouse. Let me show you what it looks like.
