NAD President Melissa takes a moment to thank our supporters, shares an update about the next NAD Board meeting, and asks you to consider hosting an ASL reading event for deaf children.

VIDEO DESCRIPTION AND TRANSCRIPT: Melissa Draganac-Hawk stands in front of an off-white wall with several hanging artworks. A small white NAD logo appears on bottom right corner.

MELISSA: Hi, I'm Melissa. I would like to share a couple of things. It is amazing how 2016 is coming to an end very soon. First, the NAD Board and I want to thank all the volunteers this year. We want to thank all the people who donated to the NAD this year. We want to thank all the people who work in the field of deaf education and continue to work tirelessly for deaf children, improving their lives. I encourage you to find time to sit and reflect on the past year to identify someone to thank. Second, the NAD Board and I are very excited about our next meeting during January 11-14, 2017 in New Mexico. We're especially excited about the town hall that will take place on Saturday, January 14th, at 4 PM. Everyone is welcome! Two local organizations will host that town hall, the New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the New Mexico Association of the Deaf. We look forward to seeing you there! We will post further details online soon. Finally, the last point I wanted to share today, some of you have wondered what you can do for deaf children even if you don't work in a school setting. One idea is to contact a local public library or bookstore or even a local deaf non-profit organization to consider hosting an ASL reading series for children. I share this idea because many parents who are learning sign are always searching for such opportunities for their deaf children. Often there are events for deaf adults but there are not enough events for deaf children. Imagine hosting an ASL reading event for deaf children, surely they will delight at the experience! This would benefit the parents as well. A hearing mother in Chicago once told me, "Deaf children need deaf adults." We need to be there for deaf children. Thank you.

Video fades to a soft white background with several different font types showing "NAD" very quickly. Copyright video ends with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) logo centered. Blue text below the logo appears, "A production of the National Association of the Deaf (copyright) 2016 All Rights Reserved".
