Region IV Representatives Lisa and Martin share an update!
Video description and transcript: Lisa Furr and Martin Price stand inside NAD Headquarters. A small white NAD logo appears on bottom right corner.
MARTIN: Region IV is the best region! I’m thrilled to introduce Lisa Furr as the newest Region IV Representative.
LISA: Thank you! And this is Martin Price. We want to recognize Sherri Collins, who was the Region IV Representative before I came on, for her outstanding hard work for the past two years. I look forward to working with you all.
MARTIN: We’re here at the NAD Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. We’ve been working with the other board members here. One of the things we discussed was the five priorities. We’re both excited to be here and work on the priorities with the rest of the board members. Right Lisa?
LISA: Yes, that’s right. We also had a guest presenter who works with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) – we learned a lot and look forward to sharing his information with you all.
MARTIN: While we were here, we participated in Deaf Grassroots Movement (DGM)’s rally on Thursday. The NAD Board had posters that said “Deaf Equal Access Now!†and walked around Downtown Silver Spring. We received great support from those who saw us. It was great to see others doing the same in other states.
LISA: It was a great rally. We also had the opportunity to visit the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) and Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES). While at MSSD, two students gave us a tour on campus. At KDES, we were able to meet with all the students from early age to Middle School during their assembly. The NAD Board sat in a semi circle up front and introduced ourselves and shared a little bit about the NAD. We look forward to the students being our future leaders. They asked great questions at the end.
MARTIN: They definitely did. I’m excited to see this generation of leaders. During that visit, we also met with Gallaudet University President Bobbi Cordano. She shared with us her vision for the NAD to work with her especially with language acquisition and deprivation. We’re excited about her work and that topic.
LISA: Her vision and the NAD’s vision is actually quite similar. I look forward to seeing what becomes of it as she continues her presidency. We also reviewed the Vision 2020 Strategic Plan – analyzed what’s been done and what’s left to do.
MARTIN: The NAD has done a lot towards the Vision 2020 and I look forward to continuing in that direction; advocating for all deaf Americans – especially in Region IV.
LISA: Until next time…
