LINDA: Hello, my name is Linda Bove and I am the Chair of the Media Expert Group under the NAD Public Policy Committee. The Media Expert Group developed a position statement to be distributed to all media and digital outlets explaining that we recognize ourselves as “deaf and hard of hearing.” It also states that the media should avoid using “deaf mute” or “hearing impaired.” Instead, the media should recognize our community which has an amazing culture, language, and heritage. When the media does stories talking about a deaf person, it should be about the deaf person not how we overcame the disability. The position statement asks the media to do enough research about us by asking deaf and hard of hearing people first hand; gather feedback from us and put something authentic together. The media should not ask others who are hearing to comment on our behalf. In addition, it is important to recognize that deaf and hard of hearing people have multiple identities. For example, we have deaf Latinx people and deaf Asian people. Each deaf person’s experience is unique and not the same for all deaf people. When interviewing with us, we ask that you provide communication access such as with sign language interpreters. We encourage deaf and hard of hearing people to work with your local newspapers and television companies – especially when they are interested in doing a story about or with the deaf and hard of hearing community. You can share this position statement with your local media so they can do the story right. Another way to use this position statement is when you see the wrong words being used in the news or media; you can share this position statement with them. We need to become partners and work with hearing people on how they can describe us better.
