A in-depth explanation about why I believe that Jesus of Nazareth is a historical person but the story of Jesus was exaggerated and turned him from a man into a god. A good parallel would be a WW2 spy novel. It is a work of fiction but it does contain real historical details as such Hitler and Normandy Beach.

The Bible is in the same way - Israel is a real country, Jerusalem is a real city, and Jesus was a real man. But the theological nature of the Bible has changed the story of Jesus from historical to theological. It is no longer a work of historical study but a historical fiction.
