HOWARD: Hi! For this month’s Ask Howard Anything (AHA) I’d like to share an update regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Today, anyone can go in anywhere and ask for accessibility and explain that you have a right to an interpreter or other accommodations. If they do not provide such accommodations, you have a right to take legal action against them. However, a bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives, which will change that process. The bill asks that a letter be sent first when not provided accommodations before you can sue. The letter must state what happened, what kind of barriers happened, and state which accommodations must be provided the next time you visit. If this bill is passed, it means we have to wait until a letter is sent before we can see any improvements. It’s been 26 years since the ADA passed! These businesses should already know, by now, how to accommodate people with disabilities and follow ADA regulations. We have a right to these accommodations! We need your help to send a letter to Congress that states that you are against H.R. 3765. We have a template available for you to use. The more letters are sent to Congress, the better. If you have any questions about this bill, contact the NAD. I ask you to stand up for your rights as a deaf American – we all should be able to go to any place at any time with equal access. Thank you.
