NAD Staff Attorney Debra Patkin explains about the Department of Justice seeking input regarding state and local websites, are they accessible?

DEBRA: We were wondering if you visit your local library’s website only to find there are no captions with their videos? Or have you visited your child’s school’s website, but found out you can’t help with your child’s homework because there are no captions available there? Or have you tried visiting your state’s Police Department’s website but realized you can’t follow it because it is not accessible? The NAD is interested in learning about your experiences with state and local government websites. We’d like to know if they’re accessible or not. The Department of Justice (DOJ) implements regulations for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Currently, the DOJ is interested in exploring the idea of creating a rule for state and local government websites. They want to know your opinions, stories, and experiences. The NAD will submit comments for this proposed rulemaking but first, we want to gather your experiences and stories before submitting our comments to the DOJ. With your input, the DOJ will realize how important it is to have accessible websites and create a strong rule from there.
