Hi, I'm here with DTV News for NAD's 53rd Biennial Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Here's a recap of the first day of the conference.

As of right now, there are about 1,500 pre-registered attendees, with more people registering as the week progresses. NAD has partnered with three other organizations for this conference- DIG (Deaf in Government), NDEC (National Deaf Education Conference), and RID Region V (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf), all collaborated to provide many different workshops, seminars, and plenary panels for attendants to participate in.

What makes this conference even better is that the hotel, restaurant, and conference staff here sign- not fluently, but they know basic signs like "thank you", "you're welcome", "how can I help you?", "more", "drink", "hot", "cool", and the list goes on and on! This was made possible by Echo Greenlee, the founder of the company deaffriendly. Look out for further explanation by my fellow anchor Melissa for more details about how this came about.

Today, as people were arriving, a letter went out written by David Reynolds, and it was posted by "We the Deaf People". The letter was sent to the election committee, stating their concerns about the voting process. We'll keep you posted regarding this recent development.

The first day ended with the Opening Ceremony, led by Mark Morales. There were also performances, including Native American storytelling, Deaf Poetry, Latin X with quotes, trivia questions, and the YAP (Youth Ambassador Program) performed the Star-Spangled Banner. It was wonderful.

That concludes our Day One Recap! Stay tuned for more coverage of the conference this week!
