On Sunday, June 26th, Pope Francis said that Christians should apologize to gay individuals, and others who have been offended by the church. The Pope felt the need to respond to a question about a German Cardinal, who said the Catholic Church should apologize for being "very negative" about the gay community. Some Catholics believe the Pope’s response is a “breakthrough in the church's tone toward homosexuality.â€
On a plane returning from Armenia, Pope Francis made a statement at a press conference. He stated, "I repeat what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, that they must not be discriminated against, that they must be respected and accompanied pastorally.â€
The Pope additionally added that the church should also apologize to the poor, exploited women, immigrants, and others as well. As of now, Francis has not changed the church doctrine that condemns homosexual acts, but he has shown a more kindhearted approach to people. Some of these people include gay and lesbian individuals.
