With less than a minute left in the final quarter of the season’s final game, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving let loose a jump shot giving Cleveland a three-point advantage over the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA finals. 53 seconds later saw the Cleveland Cavaliers win their first championship in their 52 years defeating the Warriors 93-89. It was also the first championship for any Cleveland’s sports team since 1964.
Lebron James helped lead the Cav’s to victory with his strong defense, and leading the team with scoring 27 points. He also was named the MVP. An emotional James, who is from Akron, Ohio, started his career with them before going to Miami and winning two championships. He then told the city “Cleveland, this is for you,â€.
It was quite the battle for both teams, as the series seemed to go on longer than expected. After defeating Cleveland in three of the opening four games, the Warriors were predicted to win in five games, six, at the most. But two strong performances from Irving and James, including Game 6 in which they each scored 41, led Cleveland to make history, becoming the first Finals team in five decades to force a Game 7 after being down 3-1.
The Warriors also led a strong record breaking season with 73 wins, and only 9 losses. Congrats to both teams for a season well played.
