Hillary Clinton made history Tuesday, June 6 by becoming the first female presidential nominee of a major US political party. She won four of six primaries held...including a big win in California. Her nomination won’t become official until the Democratic convention in July when super-delegates who have said they are committed to voting for her cast their ballots. Clinton acknowledged making history in her victory speech. She also congratulated her opponent Bernie Sanders for a great campaign and said it is now time for the party to unite…a call for him to end his campaign.
Sanders had seemed to close an early gap to just two percentage points in the days before the primary in California. When the votes were counted though, Clinton won by 13 points. Many thought a loss, especially a big one, would prompt Sanders to drop out of the race but in his speech he rallied his supporters as he promised to focus on next Tuesday’s final primary in Washington DC.
As expected Donald Trump won each of Tuesday’s Republican primaries and caucuses. What did come as a surprise was the tone of the victory speech he gave.
The presumptive GOP nominee read a subdued, obviously scripted speech from a teleprompter after spending half the day trying to backtrack on comments many in his own party were calling racist.
Earlier in the day Trump tried to step back from remarks he made, and repeated, about a federal judge’s Mexican heritage making him too biased to hear a case against Trump University. A growing number of Republicans had harsh words for the businessman turned candidate. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called his allegations textbook racism, but said he still supported him as the party’s nominee.
