Chicago is experiencing a rise in gun and gang violence, and in response, the Chicago Police Department is keeping a list based on a computer algorithm that assigns scores based on arrests, shootings, affiliations with gang members, and other variables. This list is an effort to predict who will most likely be shot soon or to shoot someone.
Eddie Johnson, the new police superintendent, said, “We know we have a lot of violence in Chicago, but we also know there’s a small segment that’s driving this stuff.†In a city of 2.7 million people, about 1,400 are responsible for much of the violence. The hope is that knowing who will be involved in violence can help curb the violence.
The police are warning people who rank high in the list that the police are watching them, while offering social services to those who want to stop being involved in the trouble. So far this year, more than 70 percent of the people shot in Chicago were on the list, and 80 percent of those arrested in connection with shootings were also on the list.
