Today, many parents are troubled with the question of, when is it the appropriate time for their kid to get a cell phone? If you’re stuck in traffic, and need to let your child know you will be late picking them up- is that the only reason they might need one?
Studies show that 85% of teens, age 14-17, have a cell phone. Medical information website, WebMD, states that there are many factors you should consider before letting Jimmy or Sally get their first phone.
First, parents should look at the benefits of their child having a cell phone. If your child is in an emergency, then they can dial their parents and get help right away. Another benefit, is asking your children where they are, and knowing about their daily plans. These are some of the reasons why parents are buying kids cell phones at a young age.
Many downfalls may occur though as well with children and cell phones. The National Safety Council reported that 28% of all accidents occur due to drivers using their phone to call or text. In a recent survey, one third of teens admitted that they have texted while driving on the road.
Before you buy your child a cell phone, consider these benefits and risks, and this can help you make the tough decision if your child is ready for a cell phone of their own!
