Do you have Snapchat? New filters are created every day. Some filters alter your face to make you look like an alien, or even a dog! There is one type of filter that is causing quite the controversy. Recently, Snapchat users are having an issue with the “beauty†filters that put virtual makeup on, or even get rid of wrinkles. These filters are making people’s skin tones lighter- and that’s not just the only problem.
Other Snapchat users complain that the filter also changes facial features, such as slimming down jawlines, or making your eyes appear larger. Another filter got backlash as well. The “Coachella†concert filter, with flowers that appear around your head, was also “whitewashing†users, making the skin look quite lighter. This made users feel that having a darker complexion was not attractive.
People hope that this can bring a positive conversation amongst users, and embrace their beauty without the “beautifying†filter. One woman was so angered by the filters, she posted a photo with the filter and captioned it, “#IdidNotWakeUpLikeThis.†Snapchat has yet to address these issues after multiple tweets and statuses complaining about the filters were posted.
