In the past few years, have you made the move to smoke electric cigarettes, “e-cigarettes,†instead of regular cigarettes? A new study found that children under 6 are being poisoned by e-cigarettes, rising 1,500% between 2013 and 2015. One child even died, according to an analysis conducted by the National Poison Data System. The analysis examined 29,000 children in the U.S.
90% of children have swallowed the fluid used for the e-cigarette, which is also known as “e-juice.†Rick Spiller, director of the Central Ohio Poison Center, says that two teaspoons of the juice are equivalent to 4 to 8 packs of cigarettes.
The analysis also showed that half of the children under 2 have been exposed to e-cigarettes. Data shows that there has been a dramatic increase of children that have been exposed to e-cigarettes since 2012.
In January, Federal legislation made a law requiring child-resistant packaging for e-liquid containers. Currently, there are no laws regarding the flavoring, packaging design, warnings, or nicotine concentration of the e-liquid. Spiller insists on locking up your e-cigarette liquid, and keeping it away from children to prevent future accidents.
