Travelers may want to start preparing for potential long lines and missed connections if they’re traveling at any major airports this summer. The good news is that the airports are starting to take a stand against all of these things. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport both wrote a letter to the TSA threatening to privatize the screening process if things didn’t get better.
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport, Delta Airlines, and the TSA are working together to figure out how to solve these problems. They came up with what they call Innovation Lines, or I-Lines. Starting May 24, Atlanta’s south domestic terminal will have baggage bins move to separate locations on the conveyor belt, depending on whether or not the TSA finds a bag that looks suspicious. There will also be a special area made for passengers to remove their shoes and other necessary accessories at their own pace so they don’t feel rushed.
These new I-Lines will run alongside two regular screenings and data will be collected to compare the two procedures. Chad Wolf, a former TSA assistant administrator, said that these new procedures should save passengers a lot of time.
