Sadiq Khan, of the Labour Party, and a former human rights lawyer, was elected on Saturday as the mayor of London. Khan is London’s first Muslim mayor and the first Muslim to lead a primary Western capital. Khan defeated his Conservative opponent Zac Goldsmith, who is accused of running a campaign which smeared Khan.

After Khan’s win was announced, he stated, “This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division.”

Khan won with a 13.6 margin of victory over Goldsmith. This is the largest mayoral election in London in 16 years.
