To recognize deaf and hard of hearing youth across America, the proclaims March 6th as National Deaf Youth Day, starting 2017! This proclamation is a result of one of the priorities established at the last NAD Conference in Atlanta in 2014. The NAD thanks and recognizes Pennsylvania Society for Advancement of the Deaf (PSAD) for being the state model and originator of the National Deaf Youth Day priority.

Video description and transcript:
Video begins with Chris standing in front of shelves and some artwork hanging on the wall behind him. A small white NAD logo appears on the bottom right.

CHRIS: Hello, I'm Chris Wagner and I'm the President of National Association of the Deaf (NAD). It is with pleasure on behalf of the NAD to proclaim March 6th as National Deaf Youth Day! This proclamation is the result of one of the priorities established at the last NAD Conference in Atlanta in 2014, to recognize deaf and hard of hearing youth across America on March 6th every year starting 2017. For many years, we have been celebrating Deaf History Month, which starts on March 13th to honor when a deaf president was first selected to lead a university. However, we must not forget that student leaders mobilized the Deaf President Now movement on March 6th, 1988. The four student leaders have recognized how the NAD provided them leadership experience to become self-advocates and demand equality. To remember this historic day and the importance of deaf youth, the NAD is setting March 6th as National Deaf Youth Day. Our deaf and hard of hearing youth are leaders TODAY -- they must be recognized and celebrated! I ask everyone in America to work together to meet the needs of our deaf and hard of hearing youth in many areas, especially education and employment. I look forward to seeing what local Jr. NAD chapters, State Associations, and other community members do on March 6th beginning in 2017! The NAD thanks you and all Deaf Youth of America!
