LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — A busy intersection in West Las Vegas is back open, nearly nine hours after a deadly crash this morning.
It happened in the overnight hours at the intersection of Rainbow Blvd. and Spring Mountain Rd. Police believe the driver 33-year-old Victor Javier Sandoval was drunk when he ran through several red lights in a GMC Yukon before he slammed into a Nissan Sentra, killing a woman inside.
The impact flipped both cars over into a gas station.
"I wanted to cry when I got here this morning, to see such an awful tragic accident," says Debra Turner.
She's devastated after seeing a mangled metal mess, that's what is left of the car and truck and where the crash ended. Turner is the manager of Seven Mart. She says the two cars were inches away from the gas pumps.
"So close to the pumps. I mean this whole business could be gone, if they would've hit the pumps," says Turner.
A store clerk shut off the emergency pumps immediately after the collision. A city crew was cleaning up hazardous debris.
"There's glass, there's gas on the ground. Fumes from the gas all those vapors and stuff still there. Somebody walks past this with a cigarette or something it could cause a fire," says Turner.
Police blame the disaster on suspected DUI driver now identified as Victor Sandoval. Officers say he was driving a stolen SUV. Police found multiple stolen credit cards and a semi-automatic handgun inside the car.
While officers continue their investigation, the impact of the crash continues to be felt.
"I've never seen a fatal accident like this in my life," says Turner.
Sandoval was transported to University Medical Center Trauma with life-threatening injuries. As for the victim, the woman killed, her identity has not yet been released.
