Have you used Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) in a medical setting? A VRI Taskforce has been established to collect your stories in order to help develop guidelines. What's your story?

Video description and transcript:
Video fades to a gradient background with dark blue to light blue, a grey National Association of the Deaf (NAD) logo is centered. Video fades to Al Sonnenstrahl, Deaf Seniors of America (DSA) Vice President, in the NAD Headquarters lobby. A small white NAD logo appears on the bottom right.

AL: Hi! I’m Al Sonnenstrahl, I am the Vice President of Deaf Seniors of America (DSA). DSA and NAD recognize the challenges in using Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) in medical settings such as hospitals and doctor’s office. Some experiences are positive while others are not. To completely understand all the issues involved with VRI in medical settings, we need to learn what deaf and hard of hearing people have experienced. With more information, we can better advocate for your interests - find out which situations calls for a live interpreter or VRI. In response, both organizations have established a Taskforce of which I am a chair along with Holly Ketchum, NAD Board member for Region III. The NAD-DSA VRI Taskforce wants to collect your stories — you can send a video or English text of your experience. Please keep your video under three minutes that mentions basic information that we need to know. Share which city and state this story happened in, the name of the doctor involved, which hospital this took place in, and your experience while using VRI. The Taskforce will report back to both organizations with information and strategies to address the growing use of VRI at hospitals and medical facilities.

AL: Please understand that the NAD and DSA do not intend to provide legal recourse in response to your stories. The purpose of the Taskforce is to gather information and are not covered by the attorney-client privilege. With these stories, we will be able to develop guidelines to be shared with doctors, hospitals, and others in the medical setting. Again, this is not intended for a lawsuit.

AL: The deadline is December 1, 2015 as we would like to complete this project soon. Thank you!
