HOWARD: Hello! For this month’s Ask Howard Anything, I’d like to answer a question about the NAD Gala that was held recently. The NAD has held galas for years, most of which were community oriented. In fact, when I started as NAD CEO, I was welcomed through a gala that took place in Berkeley, California. That gala was fun and a success; I enjoyed meeting many people! Since then, we have noticed that deaf and hard of hearing people were not represented well in the media. And by media, I mean TV shows, movies, articles, Broadway, and so on. It became clear that the media did not frame our community in the right way or reflect who we really are. We decided to break through that barrier, and came up with the “NAD Breakthrough Awards Gala”. The Breakthrough Awards Gala is intended to recognize specific individuals who broke through such barriers on our behalf — for deaf and hard of hearing directors, writers, actors, fashion designers, and more — #deaftalent. The first Breakthrough Awards Gala was held in Hollywood, California last year. It was a successful event because we invited specific individuals who work in the field of TV, movies, and the news. This means we invited decision makers including directors, casting directors, writers. At the same time, we supported #deaftalent by inviting and sponsoring local #deaftalents to meet and greet these important people. This was an opportunity for them to break through in Hollywood. The event also took the opportunity to recognize those who achieved breakthroughs on our behalf. Recently, we just held our second Breakthrough Awards Gala in New York City. This time we focused on Broadway and other media companies in the New York area. We invited the movers and shakers in that field and also sponsored local #deaftalent as well. The Breakthrough Awards Gala is critical to continue to push for deaf and hard of hearing people to thrive in the media. We need more roles in TV and movies as well as accurate representation in the media. The Breakthrough Awards Gala isn’t the only thing that we do — we also have many other community oriented events. For example, we have town hall events during Board meetings, visits to schools and programs for the deaf, NAD Open House, local Jr. NAD chapter events, and more. We look forward to these events! These community events help us fundraise to support our operations. More information about our fundraising activities and other revenues is made available in our annual report, our next one will be released soon! Thank you.
