HOWARD: Hello! Many of you have contacted the NAD Board, Staff, and myself to discuss concerns about deaf programs and schools across the U.S. We agree with these concerns. The NAD cherishes deaf programs and schools, including mainstream programs, all over the U.S. and want to ensure these programs and schools remain strong using ASL and English bilingual education in order for deaf and hard of hearing youth to thrive.

The NAD recognizes that we are faced with a challenge — we need more qualified people to become teachers, directors, social workers, staff, principals, superintendents, and many more positions at these program and schools for deaf and hard of hearing youth. I encourage deaf and hard of hearing Americans to look at various ways to be involved — whether its volunteering or studying to become a teacher or principal or any other position, to fill the these important jobs.

The NAD is committed to working with schools and programs for deaf and hard of hearing to ensure that our youth will succeed. The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) has invited the NAD to visit their campus. We are excited about the visit and look forward to meeting with the administration, staff, teachers, board, parents, and students. The NAD looks forward to working with WPSD to support their search process. The NAD offers the same support for all other schools and programs for deaf and hard of hearing. Right now, there are 12 schools that are looking for superintendents/CEOs. The NAD believes it is important for us to be involved, to ensure that qualified people are applying for these jobs and are hired. Again, the NAD offers support as a partner in this effort. All of us must work together to ensure that our deaf and hard of hearing youth graduate high school and go on to successful lives. Thank you.
