In this month's AHA segment, NAD CEO Howard A. Rosenblum shares one of the things people have been talking about on Facebook, the appropriate use of ASL for the "National Association of the Deaf, NAD".

The AHA Series is also available at Link .

Video begins with a teal background and a black and white photo of Howard A. Rosenblum slowly increases size as text appears: white text "AHA!", orange text "Ask Howard Anything", white text "with", white text "Howard A. Rosenblum NAD Chief Executive Officer" . The NAD logo appears as a light watermark in the bottom right corner and "#AskHoward" on the bottom left corner.

HOWARD: Hello! Welcome to a new edition of Ask Howard Anything (AHA)! I'd like to talk about something that piqued my interest recently, from Facebook. Someone made a video post about the namesign for the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). While we have the namesign for “NAD” itself, we also sign it out, word for word. Usually, we use "National Association of the Deaf" -- the Facebook commenter question the appropriate use of ASL for that. His question is fascinating and recommends this way (signs in ASL) "National Association of the Deaf". This is a very interesting suggestion! Another person commented on the same thread, suggesting a different sign for association. The thread raised up great points and dialogue. While we use the "NAD" namesign, its good to see what other people think regarding the word for word explanation. I'll bring this up with the NAD Board to discuss and decide from there. For the 2014 Conference in Atlanta, they decided to not use any English based theme and instead, use ASL theme for the conferences. This great new concept will be continued moving forward. I'll ask the Board about what they think about the signs for the NAD, word for word. I'll share when they've decided anything. Thank you for initiating great dialogue and bringing up great ideas. This is a wonderful exploration of ASL, for the deaf and hard of hearing community! Thank you for your support of the NAD.
